Millions of people visit Amsterdam every year. The city was not built to handle the growing quantity of road traffic, however, so to keep it a pleasant, accessible place for visitors, residents and businesses alike, paid parking has been introduced in a large part of the city. Motorists have to pay to park, just as in cities in Europe.
If traffic wardens from Stadstoezicht (The Amsterdam Department of City Supervisors) or the Amsterdam- Amstelland Police observe that a vehicle is parked 'incorrectly', a fine may be imposed. Moreover, the vehicle may be towed away. This occurs if the incorrectly parked vehicle is a hindrance or danger to other traffic.
More information about paying your fine or retrieving your car on the City Supervisors website.
